Summary
An ambitious and sprawling visual universe developed to support the debut album release of VENERA — the dark electronic music project started by Chris Hunt and Korn guitarist James 'Munky' Shaffer

About
During the winter of 2022, Chris Hunt (filmmaker / composer) and James 'Munky' Shaffer (Korn) approached EFFIXX to create the visuals to their nine-track debut album to be released via Ipecac Recordings — a long-running institution for experimental heavy music founded by legendary, prolific weirdo Mike Patton. Featuring notable guest appearances by HEALTH, Vowws, Deantoni Parks, and Alain Johannes, the album's thick atmosphere of bleak, dissonant texture had all the sonic attributes that inspire us most around the studio.

In its' early stages, VENERA (which translates to "Venus" in Russian) launched without sharing the identites of the artists involved. The release campaign started with a series of esoteric teasers, sharing glimpses of the project's sonic landscape and visual aesthetic.

Subsequently, a visual for each track on the album was released. Ranging from ambient, textural vignettes to full CG narratives with character animation, the visual experience explored bleak, liminal worlds threaded together with a meta-fictional manifesto.

Art Direction / Type / Layout
The original "insect queen" character, designed by Samanta Garcia (aka Dark Mesh), was the primary visual that inspired the rest of the print and video direction. We built upon it next by drafting the "blueprint" for an imaginary labyrinth.

The first sculpture to appear in Start the Healing is a nod to the archetypal "doll" head imagery featuring prominently throughout the Korn aesthetic universe.

The Insect
Music Video / VFX / Digital Sculptures
Two sculptures foreshadowing the final hive scene were created using the heads and torsos of the twin characters. Hundreds of instances of the fully-grown doll head figures were warped and bent into an eye-like nest and an infinity tunnel during the transition from the band's performance into the cosmic inner-space environment of the bridge.

Explorations & Outtakes
Various digital sculptures developed early on in the design phase. These exploration sketches formed the basis of the sculptures featured throughout the "Start The Healing" video.

The Result
Start The Healing debuted in the top 6 trending videos on YouTube when it premiered on November 10th, 2021. Korn fans were thrilled to learn about the Requiem release date through the first single / music video and it was an overall success for both the band and label.
