Directing and producing a title sequence for a feature-length documentary about music's journey to the listener's ear

The Art of Listening is a documentary film about the journey music takes to reach a listener’s ear, from the intent of an instrument maker and composer, to the producers and engineers who capture and preserve an artist’s voice. This journey is narrated by intimate conversations with artists, engineers and producers about the philosophy of their work and the intent behind each musical note they create.

This film is an invitation for music fans to rediscover the intricacies and details available in their favorite recordings. The Art of Listening is the beginning of a conversation of how the quality of our listening experiences define the medium.
EFFIXX was approached by Nashville agency and Sony AOR, Confidant, to extend the art direction established in the film's marketing art direction into a main title sequence. Designed by frequent collaborator and creative partner Ryan Sievert, his type and texture choices begged to be brought to life with practical fx motivated by a critical subject in the film itself—the fine detail and craft behind the sounds that ultimately reach a listener's ear.

The Process

Picking up design cues from art director Ryan Sievert, who produced poster art and collateral, we approached the story of sound's journey from source material to a listener's ear by focusing on the textural details of surfaces and sound vibrations, as well as the time-worn patina of the studio equipment used in the process.
